On his command I would launch two grenades into the enemy position and the rest of the team would open up with their FAMAS’s.

The guard must have been half asleep when the first grenade landed in his bunker followed a moment later by another. Within seconds of the grenades going off, which was followed by a hail of automatic fire, Moreau had scaled the last few metres of rock face and had the guard pinned to the floor by placing his knee in the small of his back. The sounds of explosions echoed around the fort as the other teams mounted their assaults and no sooner had we captured the first enemy position; we moved through and attacked a second. Green flares streaked into the sky signalling that we’d secured the outer wall of the fort and the main gate. Seconds later, a wave of helicopters came racing in low and fast along the coastline using the cliffs for cover and only exposing themselves at the very last moment before landing practically on top of the fort. Legionnaires poured out, sprinting through the main gate towards the communications centre, throwing grenades through open windows and shooting at anyone who ventured from the buildings. With the charges laid, there was a mass of shouting and commotion as teams briefly regrouped before leaving. I descended the outer walls into the main courtyard and along with Fino we followed the exodus of Legionnaires towards the waiting helicopters. A loud explosion was heard as we lifted off and our helicopter dropped almost vertically off the cliff face in order to pick up speed as we made good our escape, skimming only a few feet above the surface of the water.
